"Red flags"

Signal cautious investing
Beware of...

  high-pressure sales pitches, especially those that are inconsistent with the investment goals that you and your financial counselor previously agreed to;

  recommendations based on "confidential" or "inside" information;

  promises that sound too good to be true — they probably are;

  guarantees that you can’t lose money; all investments involve some level of risk; and

  excessive account activity that you didn’t direct or authorize

Never...

  send money to purchase an investment based only on a telephone sales pitch — get something in writing first;

  make a check for an investment payable to the sales representative;

  send checks to an address different from the business address of the brokerage firm; or accept verbal confirmation alone that an error has been corrected.
