Attention, ladies!

Sector Analysis
You already know that Main Street has valued your purchasing influence for years. Now Wall Street has discovered that women make excellent managers of their own financial affairs. Books and articles devoted to the topic of women and investing are beginning to crop up, on shelves and online, with titles as varied as Savvy Investing for Women: Strategies from a Self-Made Wall Street Millionaire and Beyond 40 Acres and Another Pair of Shoes to Girls Just Want to Have Funds: How to Spruce Up Your Money Life and Invest Like a Pro.

Now that investment firms and advisers have "discovered" this new market, they are going all out to attract and educate this long-overlooked population. Now more than ever, more women are attending college, working, managing the family finances in two-parent as well as single-parent households and outliving their spouses.

Over the next several issues of the Shareholder Report, we hope to share insights and outlooks on the opportunities available for women who take responsibility for their personal finances, whether by choice or by fate.

While planing your next move – or your first move if this is uncharted territory – financial experts suggest you get started by locating, updating and properly securing the most important documents you will need to manage your destiny. These documents include:

  • birth certificate (both yours and children’s, if applicable)
  • Social Security card
  • list of bank/savings accounts, CDs, etc.
  • previous tax returns
  • life insurance policies
  • health, disability and other insurance policies
  • stocks
  • bonds
  • mortgage documents
  • deeds
  • leases
  • most up-to-date version of will
  • trust documents
  • pension, profit-sharing & other retirement plans
  • cemetery deeds
  • employment contracts
  • partnership agreements
  • corporate buy-sell agreements
  • divorce or separation agreements
  • marriage contracts
  • marriage certificate
  • funeral arrangements

You should check with a tax or legal professional regarding the length of time some of these records should be kept and how accessible they should be, in the event of an emergency.
