Retirement
Changing jobs or retiring?

(Originally published in the 3rd Quarter 2001 Shareholder Report)

If you are like many Americans, you may find yourself making a significant change in your career soon, in part because of uncertainty in the U.S. economy compounded by September’s shocking assault on this country. Job changes, retirement and layoffs are just some of the realities facing the workforce as 2001 winds down to 2002.

As if you did not have enough to think about already, important decisions also await you concerning your retirement plan with your former employer. When you change jobs or retire, your retirement plan assets do not automatically move with you. Avoiding costly mistakes that could affect your current tax situation and your future retirement is a priority you probably have not thought of yet. However, the decision you make regarding this benefit may have long-standing repercussions on your financial future.

The big 4
Ask yourself if you have taken advantage of one of these options:

  • transfer to a Rollover IRA
  • transfer to your new employer’s retirement plan
  • leave your assets in the former employer’s retirement plan, or
  • take a cash distribution

A more detailed discussion of these options is provided on our web site at www.usfunds.com or by contacting an investor representative at 1-800-US-FUNDS to review your options. We suggest that you study each option carefully and consult a tax advisor before making a final decision.

The top 10 benefits
U.S. Global Investors wants to help you achieve your retirement goals. If a Rollover IRA meets your needs, consider the following benefits of transferring your former employer’s retirement plan assets to a USGI Rollover IRA:

  1. avoid 20-percent tax withholding that could occur on cash distributions.
  2. avoid 10-percent early withdrawal tax penalty that could occur on a cash distribution for those under age 59 1/2.
  3. receive a FREE lifetime waiver of the custodial fee if you roll over $10,000 or more.
  4. establish the USGI Rollover IRA with no minimum initial investment.
  5. invest in USGI mutual funds with no sales load/charge.
  6. gain flexibility in investment options with 12 fund choices.
  7. maintain your ability to roll over these assets to a new employer's plan at a future date.
  8. access your retirement distributions easily.
  9. preserve the tax-deferred status of your retirement assets' earnings.
  10. consolidate your retirement assets into one IRA account.
