Gold Shines After Powell Speech
August 28, 2018

Last week at the Jackson Hole Economic Symposium, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell reiterated the central bank’s commitment to raise interest rates gradually, with another rate hike expected in September. Following the meeting on Friday, gold surged above $1,200 an ounce and continues to experience gains this week. Frank explains how the yellow metal could rise even further due to the upcoming Indian wedding season, when gold gift-giving is considered auspicious. Historically, demand for gold jewelry rises leading up to fall holidays and celebrations in China and India, the world’s two largest consumers of gold.

60 Second Snapshot: Gold Is a Crowded Trade
August 21, 2018

Gold is a crowded trade and this week futures on the yellow metal turned net short for the first time since April 2001. Frank explains why traders have turned bearish on gold and how the U.S. dollar has remained strong, even though indicators show it is overbought. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell will be speaking at Jackson Hole on Friday and Frank believes his remarks could be a market-moving catalyst.

Vanguard Bows Out of Gold – Is A Rally Ahead?
August 14, 2018

Earlier this month, Vanguard announced that it was removing “precious metals” from the name of its $2.3 billion Precious Metals and Mining Fund (VGPMX) and reducing its allocation to precious metals to just 25 percent. This could be a sign that gold has finally found a bottom, since the world’s largest fund company is moving away from the space. Frank Holmes explains that, back when gold was also near a bottom in 2001, and the company removed “gold” from what was then the Vanguard Gold and Precious Metals Fund. That change coincided with a decade-long precious metals bull market.

Could this mean there is yet another gold bull market in the works? No one can say for sure, of course, but the timing of this large fund shakeup is interesting. For Frank’s full explanation about what this means for gold investors, watch the video below!

Hyperinflation and Gold's Fear Trade
August 9, 2018

Inflation dominates Venezuela’s economy, which has fallen into a deep recession of prices doubling roughly every 18 days. Frank Holmes explains how oil-rich Venezuela has been selling off its gold reserves to help pay debts. The yellow metal has held far more value than the nation’s own currency, the bolivar. Frank calls this gold’s Fear Trade, where demand for gold rises during times of hyperinflation when fiat currency values drop.

Based on Math Gold Is Set to Rally
July 19, 2018

Everything is hot! It’s hot in Texas, we have hot interest rates rising and hot geopolitics, but gold is cool. Frank Holmes explains how gold stocks compared to the S&P 500 on a ratio basis are at a huge discount. When looking at the price from a mathematical standpoint, gold is due for mean reversion, as it is currently down two standard deviations. Historically, in the following three months after being down two standard deviations, gold has rallied 77 percent of the time.

Iran Sanctions Have Disrupted Oil Prices
July 6, 2018

President Trump recently announced that importers must stop buying Iranian oil or expect sanctions. This tough stance against Iran has had a major impact on prices, as crude oil added over $6 per barrel in the week ended June 29. Crude is now up 70 percent from a year ago and could rise even further due to supply disruptions in Canada and Libya and a decline in U.S. inventories. Frank Holmes explains the importance of monitoring government policies since they can be a precursor to change in the markets.

Will Russia Win Financially in the World Cup?
July 3, 2018

Russia has spent an estimated $14 billion to host the 2018 World Cup. After recently hosting the 2014 Winter Olympics, it begs the question: are there any long-term economic benefits for the host nation of a major sports tournament? Frank Holmes explains that Russia should expect to see growing travel demand and passenger flow through its airports. However, regardless of the increased exposure from the World Cup, the Russian economy has been in an upward trend after emerging from a two-year recession.

China's Tech Industry Continues Expanding
June 29, 2018

China’s technology industry is exploding as gross output value of firms is estimated at 20 trillion yuan, or $3 trillion. The Asian nation is home to nine out of the world’s 20 largest tech firms and has more unicorns – or startups with an economic value of over $1 billion – than any other country in the world. Frank Holmes explains how tech investment will likely continue to grow, as Chinese foreign direct investment in the U.S. has fallen by 92 percent in the first half of this year due to a government crackdown on capital flight, among other reasons.

A Sentiment Indicator for Contrarian Investing
June 28, 2018

The U.S. Global investment team created a sentiment indicator of 126 indices, sectors, currencies, commodities and markets to measure cash flow levels and volatility. Frank Holmes explains how members of the team use this indicator to monitor the percentage of positions that have five-day moving averages above or below the 20-day moving averages, in relation to the S&P 500. This week the indicator fell below 20 percent which Frank views as a signal that markets are oversold and that now could be a time to buy.

How Can PMI Impact Commodities?
June 6, 2018

PMI, or the purchasing manager’s index, is an important, forward-looking indicator of the economic health of the manufacturing sector. The global PMI reading for the month of May fell slightly to 53.1, which could have important implications for commodities one or three months out. Frank Holmes details how commodities such as copper and oil historically rise or fall if the manufacturing PMI crosses above or below its three-month moving average.

The Purchasing Manager’s Index is an indicator of the economic health of the manufacturing sector. The PMI index is based on five major indicators: new orders, inventory levels, production, supplier deliveries and the employment environment.

Gross domestic product (GDP) is the monetary value of all the finished goods and services produced within a country's borders in a specific time period, though GDP is usually calculated on an annual basis. It includes all of private and public consumption, government outlays, investments and exports less imports that occur within a defined territory.
