Third Quarter 2009The Global MegaTrends Fund underperformed the S&P 500 Index during the third quarter. All sectors within the S&P 500 finished in positive territory with financials leading the way (up 25.1 percent). The fund was underweight the financial sector, which impacted the fund’s performance for the quarter. The fund’s exposure in that sector was through Berkshire Hathaway. Industrials were the second-best-performing group (up 21.2 percent). The fund was overweight this sector, with a mix of U.S. and international names in a variety of categories. Telecom was the weakest performer, similar to the second quarter. The fund was overweight this sector, with exposure consisting entirely of foreign wireless players that are growing at a much more rapid pace than the U.S. players given relative under-penetration in emerging markets. In terms of country allocations, our exposure to China (the highest among international markets) negatively impacted the fund in light of that market’s underperformance. We remain optimistic that the long-term secular theme of infrastructure spending will remain a profitable investment over the long run. The key is to understand and try to lessen some of the volatility in these stocks. Our team continues to look for opportunities on a global scale to identify quality names that are likely to be beneficiaries of infrastructure spending.
