Kitco News introduces a four-part series in December showcasing investment guidance from a wide range of experts.

Frank Holmes shares his 2014 outlook as well as his investment philosophy saying, “Successful investing is also like flying a plane.”

He said he learned from a friend who is an experienced pilot that there are three things you must always do each time you fly a plane: 1) have an approved flight plan, 2) have a completed checklist when taking off, and 3) have a completed checklist when landing. In a plane, this is a matter of life and death, so no step is left incomplete.

When it comes to investing, the flight plan is your long-term strategy that details your financial destination. Investors should also have two checklists:  A checklist for buying and another for selling. Buy what goes on sale and sell what’s been up.
