The 10 Percent Golden Rule Explained
April 26, 2019

If you follow Frank Holmes in the news or through his personal blog, then you probably know he often says “Go Gold!” or “Follow the 10 percent golden rule!” But what exactly is the 10 Percent Golden Rule? It advocates a 10 percent portfolio weighting in gold – with 5 percent in physical gold bars, coins and jewelry and the other 5 percent in gold equities such as stocks, mutual funds and ETFs.

Introducing the World's Single Largest Gold Producer
March 13, 2019

The two largest gold miners – Barrick and Newmont Mining – announced a joint venture (JV) in their Nevada operations to create the world’s single largest gold producing company with a reserve base of 48 million ounces in the ground. The JV is estimated to save both companies $500 million in the first five years of operations due to sharing resources and tax breaks, according to GMP Securities equity research. This news follows weeks of drama after Barrick offered a hostile, all-share bid to take over Newmont. Frank comments that the JV is a much better alternative, rather than have the two companies battle it out in the capital markets. Frank also says that a big winner from this news will be Franco-Nevada Corp, which owns royalties on several of the mines in the Nevada complex.

Billionaire Sam Zell Says Yes to Gold
January 31, 2019

In a recent Bloomberg interview, billionaire investor Sam Zell announced that he bought gold for the first time because “it is a good hedge” and that supply is starting to run short. Frank Holmes agrees with Zell’s reasoning and explains that the world might soon hit peak gold – where production has peaked and all the “low hanging fruit” of deposits have already been discovered. Frank also discusses rising gold demand from India, the world’s second largest consumer, due to rising GDP per capita and purchasing power.

Ring in 2019 Bullish on Gold
January 3, 2019

There’s no denying that 2018 was a tough year for gold and other commodities, but 2019 is underway and Frank Holmes is once again bullish on the yellow metal. Gold actually outperformed domestic stocks, as measured by the S&P 500, for 2018. While stocks were down over 6 percent, gold was only down by 1.55 percent.

Gold Closes The Year Strong
December 20, 2018

So far this quarter, gold bullion has crushed the market, returning more than 5 percent as of December 18, compared to negative 11.9 percent for the S&P 500 Index. In this video, Frank explains that the top performer for this quarter has been gold miners, up nearly 12 percent, as measured by the NYSE Arca Gold Miners Index. Frank believes that the yellow metal is an important part of investors’ portfolios and advocates the Golden Rule, which recommends a 10 percent weighting in gold and gold equities.

Diwali Kick-Starts Gold's Love Trade
November 9, 2018

Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights celebrated widely in India and other countries, begins in early November and lasts for five days. Frank Holmes says this celebration kick-starts Gold’s Love Trade, which is the seasonal pattern of gold gift-giving during holidays when it is considered auspicious. Gold demand historically rises leading up to Diwali, then continues into Indian wedding season, Christmas and Chinese New Year.

Gold Demonstrates Its Resilience
October 19, 2018

The yellow metal just saw its third straight week of gains after tumbling most of the year. Frank Holmes describes how gold should actually be much lower due to rising U.S. bond yields, but is instead showing resilience. Investors too are moving back into the space with inflows to ETFs backed by gold rising for three consecutive weeks. Frank also discusses how global central banks are adding to their gold reserves in an effort to diversify holdings.

Industry Consolidation Could See Gold Rise
October 4, 2018

After six straight months of losses, gold could finally have found a bottom. A strong U.S. dollar and interest rate hikes have kept the price of the precious metal down so far this year and hovering around $1,200 an ounce. However, Frank Holmes believes that the yellow metal could be on the rise due to increased merger and acquisition activity, such as mining giants Barrick Gold and Randgold Resources teaming up, which is a telltale sign of an industry finding a bottom.

Gold Shines After Powell Speech
August 28, 2018

Last week at the Jackson Hole Economic Symposium, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell reiterated the central bank’s commitment to raise interest rates gradually, with another rate hike expected in September. Following the meeting on Friday, gold surged above $1,200 an ounce and continues to experience gains this week. Frank explains how the yellow metal could rise even further due to the upcoming Indian wedding season, when gold gift-giving is considered auspicious. Historically, demand for gold jewelry rises leading up to fall holidays and celebrations in China and India, the world’s two largest consumers of gold.

60 Second Snapshot: Gold Is a Crowded Trade
August 21, 2018

Gold is a crowded trade and this week futures on the yellow metal turned net short for the first time since April 2001. Frank explains why traders have turned bearish on gold and how the U.S. dollar has remained strong, even though indicators show it is overbought. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell will be speaking at Jackson Hole on Friday and Frank believes his remarks could be a market-moving catalyst.
